A propos de cet article

Description :

THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. This collection of translated Russian poetry was the first of a long list of publications by this extraordinary man, whose life reads as an exhaustive and exhausting collection of activities, diplomatic posts, and religious interests. How he found time to do these translations is a cause for wonder - but they include works by 13 poets, along with some 'national songs', offering the reader an interesting overview of the poetic world in Russia from the 18th to the mid-19th century.Sir John Bowring KCB FRS FRGS (1792â??1872) was a British political economist, traveller, writer, literary translator, polyglot and the 4th Governor of Hong Kong. Appointed by Queen Victoria as emissary to Siam, he was later appointed ambassador to London by King Mongkut of Siam, also making a treaty of amity with Siam on 18 April 1855, now referred to as the "Bowring Treaty", which remained fully effective until 1938. He was sent as a commissioner of Britain to the newly created Kingdom of Italy in 1861. William Boutcher (1814-1900) was employed as an artist on the excavations in Mesopotamia in the 1850s, working with W K Loftus at Nineveh for the British Museum. Our book is in very nice condition for its 100+ years, bound in half-leather with marbled paper-covered boards, with decorative gilt dividing lines between the two surfaces. The outer surface of the leather on the spine has worn away at top & bottom, but the gilt decoration and title are still relatively bright and clear. The boards are badly rubbed, and corners and edges also rather worn. Inside, however, the marbled endpapers are firmly fixed with olive-green tape, the binding is firm with no loose pages, and all pages clean and bright. Textblock edges all marbled. Some very slight tanning in patches to the first few leaves only. One or two small pencil marks on blank pages. Ex libris of William Boutcher (presumed to be the artist) pasted inside front cover.
