Item description from seller

"Spirituall Wickednesses in High Places" Pym, John [1584-1643]. The Speech or Declaration of John Pymm, Esq. To the Lords of the Upper House, Upon the Delivery of the Articles of the Commons Assembled in Parliament, Against William Laud, Archbishop of Canterbury, In Maintenance of their Accusation, Whereby he Stands Charged of High Treason. Together with a True Copie of the Said Articles. London: Printed for Ralph Mabb, 1641. [iv], 34, [2] pp. First and final leaves blank. Quarto (7-1/4" x 5-1/2"). Disbound stab-stitched pamphlet in recent plain wrappers, edges rouged. Light soiling to wrappers, corners lacking, light toning to interior, occasional light foxing and soiling, early foliation to upper right corner of rectos. $250. * Only edition, one of two issues from the same year. In his capacity as the Bishop of London and Archbishop of Canterbury, Laud had spearheaded a controversial anti-Puritan movement within the church. He also proved a strong ally of Charles I during his personal rule and made an enemy of Parliament. Pym, whose reputation as an eloquent speaker made him the face of many of Parliament's grievances, delivered the articles against Laud and accused him of theological, moral and civil wrongs against England and its people. Laud was tried for treason in 1644. The trial ended without a verdict and Parliament passed a bill of attainder. Although Laud had been an ally of Charles I, the king's royal pardon did not stop his execution in 1645. English Short-Title Catalogue R8409.
