First edition thus, number 77 of 250 finely printed copies, hand-printed by James I. Haynes and bound by Emma Murray. Hearn's campaigning essay against practitioners of spirit photography appeared on 14 November 1875 in the Cincinnati Commercial. As the relatively new medium of photography became cheaper in the late 1860s and early 1870s, spirit photography grew in popularity. Its appeal was understandable in the aftermath of the Civil War and with the concurrent growth of the Spiritualist movement. Photographers such as William Mumler and William Hope capitalized on the synchronous events and ran thriving businesses taking portrait photos of people with their deceased relatives. Their photos were created by manipulating collodion wet plates to "render the apparitions more diffusely, as though the spectral form had materialised short of the camera's range of focus" (Harvey, p. 87). Though both men were revealed as frauds, many, including notably Arthur Conan Doyle, maintained that true spirit photography was possible and the debate raged across the pages of newspapers. Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) became known to the world for his writings concerning Japan, including In Ghostly Japan (1899), and was "recognized as interpreter of Japanese culture for the West" (Bleiler).
