Der Katalog zeigt eine Fülle an spannenden Arbeiten von Basquiat bis zur aktuellen Sprayer-Szene, deren gemeinsame Inspirationsquelle die Großstadt ist. Historisches Gravitationszentrum ist der US-amerikanische Maler Jean-Michel Basquiat, dessen Werke bis heute für eine große Gruppe von Künstlern wegweisende Referenzen darstellen. Der Gestus einer von Straße und Urbanität inspirierten Vitalität und eines Drives wird auf unterschiedlichste Weise in der Malerei, Fotografie und Videokunst neu interpretiert. Das Layout des Katalogs transportiert die Ästhetik der Street Art ins Buchformat und übersetzt kongenial diese subversive Bildsprache der Popkultur. The catalogue highlights the dynamic production of a contemporary generation of artists characterized by urbanity and mobility, for which the metropolis is both source of inspiration and medium of expression. The center of gravity and point of departure is the us painter Jean Michel Basquiat, whose works are unconsciously or explicitly reinterpreted as landmark reference points for the oscillating forms of painting, photography, and video art relating to street culture. The layout and printing of this catalogue likewise play with the subversive visual language of graffiti and street art. As a public platform, the street always contains a political dimension as well, ranging from the search for identity to the class struggle for social justice. To accompany the exhibition the catalogue presents alternative ways of shaping and dealing with public space, traces the line of tradition and introduces a new generation of contemporary artists. The slogan »Reclaim the street!« not only provides a common denominator for the numerous strategies of urban resistance movements, but may also be found as a programmatic approach in more recent positions like those of Rita Ackermann, Kader Attia, Ari Marcopoulos, Christian Eisenberger, and Séripop, as well as of declared street artists such as Brad Downey, Evan Roth, or Mark Jenkins who explore the visual appearance of their urban environs and have repeatedly criticized the invasion of the commercial escalating on a global scale and the surveillance of public space in their works.
