Sunbeam, RYS was a composite-hulled barquentine with an auxiliary steam engine, which was launched in England in 1874. She was a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron. She was the yacht of Thomas Brassey, 1st Earl Brassey until his death in 1918. His wife Anna Brassey wrote several popular books about their voyages aboard her, which were published between 1879 and 1889. This particular work is by the boats owner Thomas Brassey, and once again discusses sea voyages, and the author experience of the water. Brassey, born in 1836, was a Earl as well as a Liberal politician. Passionate about maritime he was the founder of The Naval Annual, a volume comprised of expansive information of naval history. Due to these publications, documenting the boat voyages, and the passion of its two owners, Sunbeam became an object of public interest and fascination. The Royal Yacht Squadron, or R.Y.S. is a prestigious yacht club, based in the Isle of White, to be member is considered a privilege. Member yachts add to suffix 'RYS' to their name, and are allowed to fly the flag of the Royal Navy. It originated in 1815, as a group of 42 men with an interest in yachting.
