Finis. ***'However, it is time for us to get from the general to the particular; so, leaving the great army of Browns, who are scattered over the whole empire on which the sun never sets, and whose general diffusion I take to be the chief cause of that empire's stability, let us at once fix our attention upon the small nest of Browns in which our hero was hatched, and which dwelt in that portion of the Royal County of Berks which is called the Vale of the White Horse.' (Quote from page 4, Chapter I). ***The novel is set in the 1830s at Rugby School, a public school for boys which Hughes attended from 1834 to 1842 and is based on the author's brother George Hughes. George Arthur, one of the book's main characters, is thought to be based on Arthur Penrhyn Stanley. Tom's life also resembles the author's, in that the final event of his school career was a cricket match. The novel also has the character of Dr. Thomas Arnold (1795-1842), who was the actual headmaster of Rugby School from 1828 to 1841. Tom Brown's School Days has been adapted for film and television and influenced the developing genre of British school novels which began in the nineteenth century and led to fictional schools such as Billy Bunter's Greyfriars School, Mr Chips' Brookfield, St. Trinian's, and Harry Potter's Hogwarts. A sequel, Tom Brown at Oxford, was published in 1861. Tom Brown's School Days also contains an account of a game of rugby football, the variant of football played at Rugby School (with many differences from the modern forms). The great success of the novel help spread the popularity of the sport beyond Rugby school. ***An early Victorian illustrated edition of Tom Brown's School Days in its original cloth-covered boards in complete condition. Of interest to collectors of Victorian children's literature and illustrated books and the illustrations of Arthur Hughes (a Pre-Raphaelite painter and book illustrator) and Sydney Prior Hall (Victorian portrait painter and illustrator) and the wood-engravings by J.D. Cooper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging.
