The last five volumes were issued at the start of that war in 1941-1942. . *** NOTE ON THE ROMANIZATION OF PRE-WORLD WAR II JAPANESE: The Japanese made an effort to avoid 'western culture' during the pre-World War II period, Japan abandoned the "Hepburn" method of Romanization in favor of a 'native' method. . . This turned out to be very difficult for westerners to read. After the war, Japanese returned to the 'standard' way of Romanization using the Hepburn system. .
