This is a poetical defence of Marriott's Female Conduct (1759), which had met with a less than ecstatic reception from the reviewers: 'No sooner had he thrown out his poetical Bait to the small Fry of minor Critics, than they immediately crouded about it, in Shoals, nibbling, and pulling it to Pieces, by gradual Diminutions'. Marriott responds with a long preface of some twenty pages, and a shorter poem in which with some good humour he responds to what he seems to have seen as foolish malice: 'This Critic Monster, like a Beast of Prey, On ev'ry new-born Book, feeds ev'ry Day. In frantic Fits, your Couplets he'll disjoin, Aiming to ridicule each single Line.'. Not much is known about Marriott, who tells us in a final paragraph that about thirty years since he had been able to apprehend two highwaymen, 'called the Gregories', when they attacked him in Epping Forest. He pursued them, killing one and arresting the other, and afterwards modernised another Horatian ode, which after this he intended to publish. But it looks as though he never did, as there are no other separate publications to his name known to ESTC.
