A propos de cet article
254pp. Octavo [23 cm] Rebacked in bright green cloth with the original olive green embossed cloth over boards (with areas of fading). Title in gilt on the backstrip. New endpapers. Missing plate at p. 29. Plates lightly foxed. Binder's label on rear pastedown. "Stryver" on p. ix. P. 213 labeled as such (not as 113 as in earlier copies). Else, the internal flaws that are cited in Smith: I are present. Lacks the signature "b" on the List of Plates. "Stryver" is misspelled in the title of the plate at p. 94. One of Dickens's most treasured works. A story set in the late 18th century against the background of the French Revolution, with vivid scenes of large-scale mob violence. Dickens's novel not only condemns aristocratic tyranny, but it criticizes revolutionary excess at the same time. With illustrations by Hablot Knight Browne (1815-1882). The final work illustrated by "Phiz" for Dickens, after an artistic partnership which lasted 23 years.
