A propos de cet article

12mo. Contemporary calf. Spine quite rubbed, lower cover slightly marked, edges of covers slightly rubbed; without (lacking?) half-title. "Fourth edition", undated, but circa 1800, with the bookplate of (the organist/singer?) William Beale. Translation of Legrand's Fabliaux ou contes du XIIe et du XIIIe siècle (Paris, 1779-81), first published in two volumes as Tales of the Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries (1786), in the second, single-volume, edition as Norman Tales (1789), and the third as Tales of the Minstrels (1800): all editions surprisingly rare. "King Arthur, according to annual custom, held during the Whitsuntide holidays, a full court at Carduel. The liberality of the sovereign was no less conspicuous than the magnificence of the ceremony on this occasion. With a profuse hand he distributed presents among his faithful knights and adherents. One alone was denied any participation of the royal bounty: Lanval, a Breton knight . . . Lanval was of royal descent; and England did not boast a knight of more superior prowess, or a more comely person . . .".…
