Hardcover. A handsome early printing of this rare artistic, cultural, and Freudian psychological study of the art and practice of tattooing in America in the 1930s. The Freudian influence is evident in such chapter subsections as "Tattoo as a substitute for woman" and "Auto-eroticism through tattoo," among others. Parry devotes time to tattooing in American subcultures, including prostitution, the Navy, the circus, prison, high society, and among the tattoo artists themselves, with interviews with Lew "Lew the Jew" Alberts, Swanky Harry Lawson, Charlie Wagner, Bob Wicks, and others. This presentable 1933 printing comes illustrated throughout in a color frontispiece, 2 color plates, and 23 black and white plates throughout. 9 1/4" X 6 3/8". xii, 171pp. Presents nicely in protective archival sleeved dust jacket. Moderate wear to unclipped color pictorial dust jacket, with hard sunning and light dust soiling to spine, small tears and chipping to edges and extremities, particularly to head and tail of sun-bleached spine, with small open tear to "3 American Beauties" vignette to spine. Original price sticker from Marshall Field & Company to rear flap. Bound in blue cloth over boards, with pictorial title label to spine. Moderate edgewear to binding, with slight lean to spine and gentle bumping and small tears to extremities. Binding is firm and sound. Toning to endpapers. Pages are clean and unmarked.
