A propos de cet article

IX, 336 S. / p. Umschlag leicht berieben, Ecke Vorsatz abgeschnitten, altersgemäß tadelloser Zustand / Cover slightly rubbed, corner of endpaper cut off, in perfect condition for its age - The astronauts are the culmination of a long process of social development, and they are the most obvious and colorful representatives of a new race of humanity engaged in a new kind of interaction with its physical environment. For our technological triumphs are the creation of a dawning technological civilization, and the astronauts and their fellows not only represent this civilization but are helping create it as well. They are not only the fruits of the labors of humanity but increasingly the arbiters of its destiny. Technological man, it would seem, has come of age. -- How is it possible that this nice young man 'one of America's astronauts-his name does not matter for he is Everyman of the future and his friends-with their demi-chic wives and scrubbed children straight out of Better Homes and Gardens, with their football and their scuba diving and their military academy and engineering school backgrounds, these thoroughly conventional and middle class and essentially dull people, who would make such nice neighbors and such unlikely friends-could these be the supermen whom the race had struggled for a million years to produce? The mind boggles. One cannot but be struck that not only is evil banal but glory also. The future would be like the present only more so." -- Which of these realities is "really real" asks Victor Ferkiss in the opening chapter of Technological Man. To ask the question is to answer it. They both are. This is the -- central fact one must perpetually keep in mind if one is ever going to be able to understand the vast changes which are already beginning to transform human society, the dangers they portend and the triumphs they promise. Technological man is both myth and reality." -- In general, books devoted to the study of "futures" would seem to be one of two kinds: the gee whiz type and the doomsday variety, those that prophesy a technological paradise and those that warn of enslavement to the machine. Mr. Ferkiss' book is neither of these. It is an insightful, objective, nontechnical, and eminently readable evaluation of man's immense possibilities and also his severe limitations as he stands on the threshold of a new age. In the author's words, it is "an attempt to point out at least the direction in which mankind must go if it is going to be able to deal with the new challenges put to the social order by technological change." -- Victor C. Ferkiss is the author of Africa's Search for Identity and a contributor to both scholarly journals and more general publications. A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he has trained foreign aid personnel, worked on the staff of the Peace Corps, and been active in domestic politics. A professor of government at Georgetown University, Mr. Ferkiss is currently a visiting professor of political science at the University of the West Indies, Trinidad.
