He rose from a Hackney backstreet to securing large metropolitan infrastructure contracts, most notably as a lead contractor for architect Leslie Green on the London Underground (Highgate Station). They moved from Hackney to White Herne (Whit Hern House) in Cheshunt into the role of a country gentleman. Florence Emily Chessum (c. 1863-1935) was the wife of Jesse and matriarch of the family. Anthony Jesse Chessum (1925-1942) was the only son of Francis Jesse, who died at the age of sixteen while residing at Elm Hill, Hawkhurst. The family mantel passed to Hazel Yvette Chessum (1925-2016), the daughter of Francis Jesse and the last link to the family's Victorian fortune. Raised at the Oakfield estate in Devon, she married Basil Prophett, a member of a local professional family from Newton Abbot.
