A very good copy, in French, of this collection of the works of the famous French playwright Racine Black cloth spine on beige paper printed boards with gilt titles on spine Binding is tight and sound A small stain at upper front cover and age darkeninf of the covers and text, which are typical, given the quality of the paper used On the front pastedown is the personal bookplate of the well known actor Douglas Fairbanks Jr Jean Racine (1639 -1699), was a French dramatist, one of the three great playwrights of 17th-century France, along with Molière and Corneille as well as an important literary figure in the Western tradition Racine was primarily a tragedian, producing such "examples of neoclassical perfection" as Phèdre, Andromaque, and Athalie He did write one comedy, Les Plaideurs, and a muted tragedy, Esther for the young Racine's plays displayed his mastery of the dodecasyllabic (12 syllable) French alexandrine His writing is renowned for its elegance, purity, speed, and fury, and for what American poet Robert Lowell described as a "diamond-edge", and the "glory of its hard, electric rage" Racine's dramaturgy is marked by his psychological insight, the prevailing passion of his characters, and the nakedness[clarification needed] of both plot and stage Douglas Elton Fairbanks Jr, KBE, DSC (1909 - 2000) was an American actor, producer and decorated naval officer of World War II He is best known for starring in such films as The Prisoner of Zenda (1937), Gunga Din (1939) and The Corsican Brothers (1941) He was the son of actor Douglas Fairbanks and was once married to Joan Crawford 1096 pp.
