MARTYN, Thomas. Thirty-Eight Plates, with Explanations: Intended to Illustrate Linnaeus's System of Vegetables, and Particularly Adapted to the Letters on the Elements of Botany. London: Printed for J. White, 1799. vi,72pp. 38 hand-colored plates. 19th-century 3/4 straight grain morocco, gilt-ruled spine. Some faint scattered foxing, else very good. Sitwell, Great Flower Books, p.118. Thomas Martyn (1735-1825) was Professor of Botany at the University of Cambridge. He was an early adopter of the Linnaean system and gave a course of lectures on it in 1763. Martyn also translated Rousseau's Letters on the Elements of Botany (1785). The artist, F. P. Nodder, was a botanical painter to Queen Charlotte and was associated with Sir Joseph Banks.
