A propos de cet article

Description :

The first edition of Edward William Lane's popular early English translation of the popular collection of middle Eastern folktales known as 'The Arabian Nights', beautifully illustrated by William Harvey. The first Edward William Lane edition.Illustrated by the British wood-engraver, William Harvey, with many monochrome vignette wood engravings.Previously owned by Charles Edward Mathew, a British mountaineer and a founding member of the 'Alpine Club' in London, with his bookplate to the front pastedowns.A three volume, complete set. This set features Edward William Lane's important English translation of the 'Thousand and One Nights' or, 'The Arabian Nights', a collection of Middle Eastern folktales. Edward William Lane was a British translator and lexicographer, with this being one of his best known works alongside his Arabian-English Lexicon. This edition is noteworthy for being one of the earliest English translations of the work, and was considered to be the leading English translation, before the arrival of Richard Burton's translation in 1888. The work is also noted for the copious notes from Lane, which were later published separately by his great-nephew. Lane's version is considered to be a bowdlerized version, censoring some of the elements which others kept in later editions.Bound in full morocco with gilt details and raised bands. In the publisher's original full morocco. Externally generally smart with fading to the spines, and rubbing to the spines, raised bands, joints and extremities. Bookplate belonging to 'Charles Edward Mathews' to the front pastedowns. Internally firmly bound with lightly age toned and generally clean pages with spotting to the fronts and rears. Very Good.
