Edward William Lane was a British translator and lexicographer, with this being one of his best known works alongside his Arabian-English Lexicon.This edition is noteworthy for being one of the earliest English translations of the work, and was considered to be the leading English translation, before the arrival of Richard Burton's translation in 1888. The work is also noted for the copious notes from Lane, which were later published separately by his great-nephew. Lane's version is considered to be a bowdlerized version, censoring some of the elements which others kept in later editions.Bound in full morocco with gilt details and raised bands. In the publisher's original full morocco. Externally generally smart with fading to the spines, and rubbing to the spines, raised bands, joints and extremities.
