A propos de cet article

28 x 22cm. Paperback, 192pp. Published for an exhibition held between May 24th and November 16th, 1980, at The Museums at Stony Brook, New York. Decidedly gothic Americana in theme, 'A Time to Mourn' explores in words and pictures the development and decline of urban American mourning customs during the nineteenth century. The seven essays in the book treat nineteenth-century mourning as a subject of social history. The surviving tangible expressions of grief, the graveyards, silk and wool embroideries, jewellery, paintings and fashionable mourning costumes are depicted through the abundantly illustrated essays and an extensive catalogue of mourning relics. Crease to rear cover, and a minor crease to preliminary page edges, otherwise good.
