Synopsis :

Cancer surgery of the mouth and throat can involve major incision wounds, tracheotomy, or necessitate the breaking of bones. Recognizing the benefits and success of robotic surgery in other areas of medicine, the authors present its use in head and neck surgery, resulting in less surgery, less deformity, and faster rehabilitation. In this new book, the authors describe the preoperative aspects of Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS), including patient evaluation, instrumentation and set-up, moving on to diagnostic endoscopic and surgical techniques for tonsillectomy, laryngectomy, tongue base and glottic resection, and speech and swallowing considerations. They conclude with an examination of the potential for TORS in skull-base surgery, its future application and, importantly, telesurgery via the Internet.

À propos de l'auteur: Dr. Weinstein is Professor and Vice-Chairman of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the University of Pennsylvania Health System. Dr. O'Malley co-founded the first human robotics head and neck and skull base program in the world and is co-principal investigator of the first IRB approved human clinical trial for robotic surgery in the specialty. He is actively developing novel robotic surgical procedures (TORS) and instrumentation to advance the use of this technology in all aspects of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery. He was instrumental in the achievement of US FDA approval in December 2009 for TORS (Trans Oral Robotic Surgery).
