A reprint of this groundbreaking work on transgender individuals. Written by Harry Benjamin, a doctor who was one of the first to challenge psychology teachings which thought therapy could change a person's thoughts in regard to their gender identity. Benjamin thought of gender along the lines of a continuum, and felt that traditional methods of treating transgender people forced them to hide their feelings and lead miserable lives. Instead, Benjamin advocated changing the body to fit the perceptions of the person. This work provides his experiences through case histories, discussing hormone therapy and surgery.
