A propos de cet article

2 vols. 8vo. (22 x 14.5 cm). pp.xxxv+623; xiv+690. Publisher's original gilt-decorated red cloth, spines with gilt lettering, top edges gilt, other uncut. Engraved portrait frontispiece with tissue guard, 8 plates (5 folding), title-page vignette in both volumes, numerous wood-engraved vignettes and figures in the letterpress, large linen-backed coloured folding map in pocket (56 x 74 cm) at end of Volume I. Some fading to spines, occasional discolouration and light shelfwear to covers, a little foxing to endpapers, generally a very good set. First published in 1888, this is a re-issue of the second edition, first published in 1921, that edition being the first with Doughty's new preface, and Lawrence's introduction, published in a limitation of 500 copies. "Travels in Arabia Deserta, on which Doughty labored from 1879 to 1884 and which he continued correcting until its publication in 1888, is an unrivalled encyclopedia of knowledge about all aspects of nineteenth-century and earlier Arabia. In a notable contemporary review in Academy, Sir Richard Francis Burton praised the book's scientific knowledge and its style. So reliable was the book's anthropology of the Bedouin peoples and its topography, that British intelligence mined it for information during the First and Second World wars. Doughty's contributions to all areas of Arabian knowledge continue to be praised by scholars" (Stephen Tabachnik in ODNB). Lawrence had long admired Doughty's work and was instrumental in getting it republished by Jonathan Cape, it was to be the publisher's first book, "Lawrence's notoriety was desired for the expensive two volume set [it was published at 9 guineas, somewhere over £1, 000 today] and he was persuaded to write his first introduction" (O'Brien). "No one has looked so narrowly at the Arab and the life of Arabia as Doughty, and no one has painted them in literature with a touch so sensitive and sure. And not only Bedawin life of whose hardships he suffered to the last wandering as one poorer than the poorest, but also the life of the oasis towns of the Nejd. One can do Doughty's pages no justice by quotation. His book belongs to that rare and supreme class in which the author speaks not for himself, but for all who might find themselves in like case" (Hogarth). "Early in 1875 he set out on a camel-journey through Sinai which brought him in May to Maan and Petra. Here he heard tales of other rock-monuments, unseen by western eyes, at Medain Salih on the pilgrim road to Medina, and he determined to explore them. His interest had been aroused not less in the geology and the life of Arabia than in its ancient remains, and he proposed a survey of the Wadi Arabah region as a second object of his expedition. At Damascus, however, Doughty found the Turkish authorities unwilling to let him join the Meccan pilgrim caravan; and the British Association and the Royal Geographical Society, to both of which he appealed for support, declined to aid him. So rebuffed, he made up his mind to enter Arabia at his own risk and charges. His original plan, however, was modified: instead of returning northwards from Medain Salih, he would join the Bedouin and live with them, if he might, as a wandering physician. Adopting the name Khalil and the dress of an Arab Christian, he settled down at Damascus for a year to learn Arabic. In November 1876 he slipped out and quietly joined the pilgrim caravan. The journey thus begun led Doughty from Medain Salih to Hail, Kheybar, and the Kasim in central Arabia: it ended twenty-one months later, on 2 August 1878, at Jiddah on the Red Sea. Its first object, the investigation of the Nabathaean remains of Medain Salih and El Ala, did not furnish its most important results. Doughty's records of those monuments were, indeed, the first to reach Europe, and, edited by Ernest Renan, were published in 1884 by the Académie des Inscriptions as Documents épigraphiques recueillis dans le nord de l'Arabie. But as a spectacle Medain.…
