A propos de cet article

~ Only on auction record for this edition on hub. ~ The first plate contains a detailed a geological column of strata, being a 'Section of the Strata, to the Low Main Coal at St. Anthon's Collery, near Newcastle upon Tyne'. This is ten years before the publication of Forster's Section of the Strata near Newcastle (1809) and must be one of the earliest of its kind. Faujas was the first to recognize the volcanic nature of the basaltic columns of Fingal's Cave, on Staffa. The island was visited earlier in 1772 by Sir Joseph Banks, who remarked that the stone was a coarse kind of basalt, very much resembling the Giant's Causeway in Ireland (as noted in Pennant's Tour in Scotland and Voyage to the Hebrides). Faujas' Voyage en Angleterre, en Écosse et aux Îles Hébrides (1797) contains anecdotes about Sir Joseph Banks, William and Caroline Herschel and Dr. John Whitehurst, including an amusing account of The Dinner of an Academic Club (the Royal Society). It was shortly translated into English (2 vols., 1799) newcastle (1809) and must be one of the earliest of its kind. (wiki). sm8vo., 20.2cm, (in 8s), The First England Edition, in 2 volumes, viii, iii,361 & viii,352pp., (inc. errata in each), plus 7 copper engraved plates, complete with half titles, bound in contemporary half mottled calf, gilt decorated panel borders, gilt decorations in the panels, double black and red crushed morocco labels, marbled boards, text is clean and sound, a fine set, rare in this condition.…
