A propos de cet article

8vo, pp [8], 44; [4],76, first title page within typographical border, bound in 18th century polished calf, sometime, [circa 1900] rebacked in calf, old label of Nottingham Public Reference Library to upper board and front endpaper, 19th Century bookplate of Percy J and Alice G Cropper, a few small old stamps to the text, binding rubbed at edges, text internally soudn and clean throughout, FIRST EDITIONS THUS, two very rare Nottingham printings of devotional tracts, themselves very rare in any form. Nottingham printer John Collyer explains at the start of the Treatise directing to the understanding.the word of God.' how he came upon this early 16th century work, realising its importance and reprinting it here. It is in fact the work generally known as 'Patrick's Places' first printed in Latin in 1528, the same year in which its Lutheran convert priest and author Patrick Hamilton was burnt at the stake in St Andrews as a heretic. It was subsequently translated into English by John Frith in 1564 and reprinted in editions of Foxe. The work 'echoes the doctrine of justification by faith and the contrast between the gospel and the law in a series of clear-cut propositions.' and has come to be regarded as a significant Lutheran text. Collyer's reprint includes a sixteen page commentary on the work by an anonymous hand - possibly again the printer's. The second work entitled 'The One Necassary Thing to be Sought' has been attributed to the 17th Century nonconformist writer Robert Fleming, and apart from this reprint is known through a couple of late 17th Century pamphlets in a handful of copies. This Nottingham reprint is recorded in ESTC three locations, including this copy; the Hamilton tract likewise, suggesting that the two were indeed issued together. p.1: 'A brief treatise of M. Patrick Hamelton, called Patrick's Places, translated into English by John Frith, . '.WITH: The one necessary thing to be sought. Briefly touched. In a four-fold dialogue, upon some of the great and most concerning truths of practical religion.ImprintNottingham : [s.n.], Printed in the Year, MDCCXXIIII. [1724]Physical description. ; 8°.…
