Synopsis
In this groundbreaking two-volume textbook, presented here in one volume and first published in 1867, Lord Kelvin and Peter Guthrie Tait offer a unified scientific explanation of the physical world through the laws of energy. They defined much of what today is considered physics, covering such realms as liquid motion, instantaneous velocity, and the motion of a rigid body around a fixed point. From simple movement to fluid dynamics, the authors provide readers with the necessary science and mathematics to describe complex systems of motion. Irish scientist, engineer, and author LORD WILLIAM THOMSON KELVIN (1824-1907) is considered a foundational thinker of modern physics. He invented the Kelvin temperature scale and also helped develop the first transatlantic telegraph cable. Scottish physicist PETER GUTHRIE TAIT (1831-1901) was educated at Cambridge. Among his writings is the scientific and religious text The Unseen Universe (1901).

The term Nataral Philosophy was used by Newtoh, and is still aaed in Britisli TT niT ersities, to denote the investigation of laws in the material world, and the deduction of results not directly observed. Observation, classificatioD, and description rf phenomena necessarily precede Natural Philosophy in every department of natural science. The earlier stage is, in some branches, commonly called Natural Histoiy; and it might with equal propriety be so called in all others. Our object is twofold: to give a tolerably complete account of what is now known of Natural Philosophy, in langutige adapted to the non-mathematical reader; and to furnish, to those who have the privilege which high mathematical acquirements confer, a connected outline of the analytical processes by which the greater part of that knowledge has been extended into rons as yet unexplored by experiment. We commence with a chapter on Motion, a subject totally independent of the existence of Matter andF orce. In this we are naturally led to the coneideration of the curvature and tortuosity of curves, the curvature of surfaces, distortions or strains, and various other purely geometrical subjects. 62 ..
