The election is the first Tuesday in November. The Tuesday Code is what you do next.
What happens if a contested national election splits the country and the power and communication grids go dark? The question isn’t who governs the country anymore, but what do you do when no one is coming to save you?
"Exciting. Riveting... a captivating read and, in some ways, a warning." —Hollis Felkel
"After an insurrection, technology is abused and survival depends on self-governance and trust." —BK
"Find the meaning of The Tuesday Code, a beautiful way to live your life and share the light." —AG
Some people stop waiting. A street-wise teenager brings food to hungry students at an arts academy, taking supplies only from the stores abandoned by owners who aren't coming back. A National Guardsman measures every hard choice against his Rotary’s Four-Way Test. The Bensalem automotive plant becomes an Upcountry refuge, where a nurse opens a clinic to keep people healthy, and a teacher builds a school to turn children's restless energy toward learning. Engineers repurpose the plant into a hydroturbine so Bensalem can share its light with others.
None of them is a hero with a plan to save the country. Big-"D" democracy—elections, institutions, the machinery of power—only holds when ordinary people practice small-"d" democracy in their daily lives—showing up, taking responsibility, keeping faith with a neighbor, focusing on what they can control one action at a time.
Fans of Station Eleven, One Second After, The Rose Code, and Leave the World Behind will enjoy a novel about power, conscience, and what one generation is willing to hand the next.
THE STORY
Riley built his career on the order and stability required to run the world's most advanced automotive plant. When the Gridlock hits, he does what most people do. He keeps his head down. Signs what needs signing. Tells himself it’s an emergency. For now.
Each concession is reasonable. Each one makes the next one easier. Until it’s not.
In the wreckage of the Great Gridlock, Riley meets two people he can’t quite dismiss.
Victoria is a master teacher who holds people to a standard so high it makes them uncomfortable. She doesn't manage anyone. She sets the bar, steps back, and gives them the freedom to rise.
Leo is a street-wise teenager who survived the collapse by taking what he needed and sharing what he had. He didn’t wait for the system to come back. He built something in its place. He lives the Code before he can name it. That’s what Victoria sees in him.
Riley likes them. He doesn’t believe it’s enough.
The Bensalem plant is under attack digitally, physically, and from within. The federal surveillance system tightening around them didn’t start as a weapon. Neither did the drone swarms massing outside the valley. Nor did the person inside the building Riley thought he could trust.
Riley understands order. Victoria and Leo understand freedom. Which saves Bensalem?
WHY THIS BOOK, WHY NOW
The Tuesday Code arrives during the 250th anniversary of American independence and a consequential election season, describing a world you can imagine where ordinary people take charge when the system that was supposed to protect them becomes the threat.
For readers of Station Eleven, which showed what survives a collapse, and Severance, which showed the cost of going along, The Tuesday Code goes further, asking whether a free society can distribute its power faster than its enemies can consolidate theirs.
What can you build in the rubble when no one is coming to save you?
