A propos de cet article

BOUND NEWSPAPER. Large folio. 26 x 19.25 inches. 52 issues of 4 pp. each (total, 208 pp.). Bound in original half blue cloth, gilt over marbled boards. Some lower right hand corner damp stains not affecting legibility of text and a few edge tears and early fold lines; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by a few half tones and text drawings and by pictorial advertisements. A complete year of the Kentish Express, midweek Tuesday edition for 1907 comprising all fifty two issues. A fascinating assortment of news and articles which give a vivid picture of daily life in mid- and east Kent. It features numerous sensational news reports, police court cases, shipping, Kent coal field and hop growing items and market reports, in addition to railway timetables, classified advertisements, including those for male and female servants, and large pictorial advertisements for patent medicines and foods. Some noteworthy headlines in this volume include, A Huge Conger caught at Dungeness (illustrated), The Siege of Grove Farm (Sturry), Queer Mushrooms (which turn out to be a poacher's rabbit and snares), Disappearing Soap at Dover Co-op. and Sale of Contraband Tobacco at Dover. The Kentish Express was founded in 1855, became part of the Kent Messenger Group in 1971, and still appears as four regional Express titles covering Ashford, Folkestone, Hythe and Romney Marsh and Tenterden.
