Fine set of the superb engravings after Turner, and among the finest work of the finest of British steel engravers of the period. Full publisher s brown morocco, slightly rubbed at edges, Vol. II front cover detached, a few marginal tears without loss in Vol. I and some slight waterstaining; despite these flaws, an attractive set, with plates clean and fresh. With the bookplate of the American Irish Historical Society in each volume A Series of 120 Engravings from the Works of the Late J.M.W. Turner. Descriptive Text by W. Cosmo Monkhouse. Includes the title leaves to both Volume Two and Three, but with only 14 of the 37 plates from Volume Two present, and 12 of the 41 plates from Volume Three. Full title: "The Turner Gallery: A Series of One Hundred and Twenty Engravings from the Works of the Late J. M. W. Turner, R. A. The Descriptive Text by W. Cosmo Monkhouse. In Three Volumes." 26 plates in total. Each plate accompanied by a leaf of text. Page dimensions: 364 x 262mm. Red half-morocco binding with marbled endpapers. Inner hinges reinforced with cloth tape. Spine title: "The Turner Gallery / Vols. II-III". Rebound in early 20th Century? Plates in very good condition. Some with a few minor spots of foxing to the margins. Tissue guards present to all plates. Tissue guards with heavier spots of foxing. Binding sound. Spine leather rubbed, but with no splits or tears. Joints strong. Half-Leather Bound. Etat : Fair. Limited/Numbered. A collection of the works of Joseph Turner, (11775-1851). From a limited edition of 300*copies, this being numbered 176. The edition was printed on India Paper. Includes 60*steel engravings. Text supplied by English poet and critic William Cosmo Monkhouse. Unpaginated. Undated, believed to be 1890. Half-bound in original red morocco with gilt line decoration and red buckram to the remainder. Five raised bands to the spine. Gilt lettering to the upper board and spine. Upper page edges in gilt with other edges left untrimmed. Heavy rubbing to extremities. Rubbing to edges of boards. 8cm crack to the head of the upper joint. 2cm crack to the foot of the lower joint. Neither have caused any deterioration in the containment of the book/text-block. Small cut to the head of the spine. Rubbing to surface cloth. 2cm piece of cloth coming away from the leather of the lower corner of the upper board. Small reference label to upper board and second free endpaper. Embossed full leather bindings with 5 raised bands on spine. Giilt titles and decorations on front covers and spines. Gilt edges. Marbled endpapers. Remarkably well-preserved copies, with lightest rubbing only to leather bindings. Hinges strong. Tissue guards to each illustration. No sign of foxing or staining in either volume. Three-Quarter Leather. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. Exceptionally rare two volume complete set in original red leather binding with all plates present and in exceptional nrFine state with original tissue guards. Tooled leather binding with 5 raised bands on each and gilt lettering and designs; heavy stock paper with gilt on all fore-edges; marbled page edges. Interiors are fresh and clean with no signs of foxing or staining; minimal light soiling at most. The exterior boards themselves have heavy wear with leather edges frayed and flaking; corner exposed; volume two has large staining marks to the covers with cloth removed from edges; both exteriors soiled; interior hinges weak; volume one has loose end pages. Overall bindings and spines present well on a book shelf; leather is generally scuffed but still fresh. No date given, c1880. First American edition. Joseph Mallord William Turner RA (1775 - 1851) was an English Romantic landscape painter, water-colourist, and printmaker. Turner is regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting. Although renowned for his oil paintings, Turner is also one of the greatest masters of British watercolour landscape painting.
