Poor condition. Probable first edition, second issue (copyright page lacks the dot above "in" within first line of the three-line statement; page 9's header has mis-strike on top of second "i" in "Impressions"). Hardcover: H 15cm x L 9.75cm. Mid-18th century quarter leather binding (leather spine with paper boards); vertical furrows to spine leather with head chipped and no title label present; abrasion and rubbing to boards with edges worn particularly at corners. Collates as [fp], [ffep], 1-12, 15-22, 25-483, [rp] - so missing ffly, rfly, rfep; online-sourced facsimiles of text pages 13-14 and 23-24 laid-in. Title leaf missing bottom 1.75cm so date is missing although two -line Harper imprint remains; antiquarian ink and old pencil writing and doodling on front endpapers and rear pastedown; writing on front pastedown includes phrase "Circulating Library" but might be referencing the owner's personal lending library as there are no institutional marks; foxing and staining to leaves; copyright page has old binder's tape repair to tear. Some leaves/quires slightly pulled with a few having worn edges; text block still remains firm. Sold as is with all faults. A classic in travel literature, TWO YEARS BEFORE THE MAST features autobiographical details of life in the American merchant marine and impressions of pre-gold rush California gleaned by Dana during his 1834 to 1836 leave from his studies at Harvard.
