Item description from seller

"New edition - improved and enlarged, with entirely new engravings" (as stated upon title page). 700 pages. Hardcover: H 16.5cm x L 11.25cm. Contemporary full calf leather binding; scuffing at edges and along joints; spine's black title label furrowed but retains fairly bright gilt lettering "Union Bible Dictionary;" patch of surface peeling to leather at rear board's top right. Joints/hinges and text block binding are firm. Text block edges toned. Endpapers toned/foxed; varied foxing/toning to interior leaves with strongest occurrences to book's several unpaged single-sided b/w plates; associated light toning to pages 328-329 from laid-in Women's Missionary Society, M.E. Church, South printed paper slip. Frontispiece with tissue guard. All six maps present but most no longer folded to their original lines; page 6 map list specifies map #5 as being at page 396 but is actually bound-in between pages 392-393 (minor binder's error?). Small b/w illustrations also interspersed amongst double column text. Authorship unspecified other than title page's citation as being by the author of "The Teacher Taught" with Preface on pages 3-5 concluding with the initials "F.A.P." Book was authored by Frederick Adolphus Packard (1794-1867) who served as editor for most all American Sunday-School Union publications from the time of his appointment in 1829 to his death in 1867 and wrote or compiled some forty books himself as well as being a frequent contributor to periodicals. Title page undated but 1855 copyright specified on verso. A nondenominational educational and missionary organization, the Philadelphia-based American Sunday-School Union was founded in 1817 and continues to operate today as the American Missionary Fellowship. Still a very good copy of a handsome antiquarian book.
