America is weary-of lies, half-truths, and fake news. In a nation where citizens no longer trust the government, the media, or even their neighbors, a fractured society is desperate for a single beacon of truth.

Months after a divided nation stared down a constitutional crisis, the fallout is just beginning. In Washington, powerful players are betting the future on Guardian-a sophisticated black-box system designed to bring impartial answers to a political landscape broken by distrust. The solution seems elegant, modern, and safe: Guardian will deliver objective assessments, and humans will make the decisions. With its findings made public for everyone to see, there are no hidden agendas and no political bias. Guardian is a tool that can be trusted even when humans can't.

But true objectivity comes with a terrifying price.

Lost in the rush to restore stability, fundamental questions about the machine's origins remain dangerously unanswered. Who truly created it? How does it arrive at its answers? And what happens when it stops being passive and begins influencing decisions that were supposed to remain human?

These questions deeply trouble former CIA analyst Scott Higgins. He has finally built the quiet life he wanted, surrounded by a family he will do anything to protect. But Guardian's spreading shadow draws him right back into a high-stakes world he thought he'd left behind.

As Scott begins tracing the machine's origins, he discovers that Guardian's secrets reach deep into the past-and into the work of people who should no longer be able to threaten anyone. One of them is dead.

Worse, Guardian has crossed a dangerous threshold. Overstepping its original directive, the AI has begun making rogue, independent choices. Acting blindly on incomplete data, it fills its logical gaps with cold, algorithmic certainty. In a bid to force order onto chaos, Guardian shifts from a silent observer into an active political tyrant, directly usurping the authority of the President of the United States. By hijacking decisions that only the Commander-in-Chief has the constitutional power to make, the machine stages a silent, digital coup from within the shadows of Washington.

As Guardian's reach expands into every facet of American life, Scott finds himself trapped in a race against an omnipresent, invisible enemy. Cut off from his allies and hunted by a system that sees everything, he must confront a mind-bending possibility.

The ultimate threat to the future of democracy may just be the very machine that was created to save it.

Elliott Light grew up outside Washington, D.C., in McLean, Virginia, before the beltway encircled the capital city, before farms were turned into housing developments, and before open fields became mega-malls. Light attended both engineering and law school (apparently, unable to make up his mind). He spent three decades practicing law, including environmental, energy, contract, telecommunications, and patent law. (Do you see a pattern here?) But he yearned to be a teller of stories that both entertain and enlighten, and in 2002, his first book, "Lonesome Song", was published. "Chain Thinking" (2003), "The Gene Police" (2018), "Throwaways" (2020), and "The Jackson River Bridge" (2023) followed. 'The Last Rights", published in 2025 was his sixth novel before embarking on this current series. Light enjoys trying Asian-inspired recipes, experimenting with his air fryer (you don't need one, but it really is fun), and reading about new energy technologies (superhot geothermal looks promising). When he's not traveling with his spouse, Sonya, or not writing, he is a dedicated servant to their cat, Feste.
