The Chinese are New Zealand's largest non-European and non-Polynesian ethnic group, with a history in this country dating back to the mid-1850s. Through 12 essays, this study traces the history of a group who have been the victims of racial stereotyping, from the 19th century goldrush to the present day. A variety of contributors offer different perspectives, including historical, legal and archeological. The development of the Chinese community, the formation of their identity as a visible minority, their settlement and adaption issues, and their transnational behaviour are all explored here. As its subject is the most conspicuous group of "essential outsiders", owing to their number as well as their perceived economic privilege, this study also provides an in-depth examination of New Zealand's race relations and national identity.
À propos de l?auteur: Editor Dr Manying Ip is widely accepted as a comprehensive researcher in this field and enjoys the endorsement of the contributors who are recognised scholars in their respective research areas. Hong Kong educated Dr Manying Ip ONZM, BA (Hong Kong), MA, PhD, is Associate Professor of Chinese in the Asian Studies Department of the University of Auckland, New Zealand. She was born in 1945, in Guizhou, Mainland China, where her parents had taken refuge after the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong. Her family returned to Hong Kong, where she received a classical Chinese education at home, and an English education at school. She subsequently graduated with a BA (Hons) in history from the University of Hong Kong. In 1974 she immigrated to New Zealand, where she completed postgraduate studies, gaining an MA in Chinese literature and a PhD in History from the University of Auckland. Dr Ip is a highly respected public advocate for the Chinese communities and she was awarded the Suffrage Centennial Medal in 1993 and the ONZM (Officer of New Zealand Order of Merit) in 1996. She has written several books that have won wide critical acclaim and sold well.

Soft cover. Etat : Near Fine. This copy feels unread. The only book that comprehensively covers the fortunes of Chinese immigrants in New Zealand from the earliest encounters in the mid-1800s, to the present day (including transnationalism) offering valuable data and expert viewpoints for international study and comparision. A timely book that will strike chords with the Chinese communiities in Australia, Canada and the United states, because of the strikingly similar expieriences of members of those communities at the hands of colonial governments and sometimes xenophobic societies.
