Item description from seller

Ten issues bound in one volume, with additional material as called for, bound without the wraps. Octavo. 23cm. Contemporary mottled full calf, neatly rebacked to style with a leather and gilt title label. Some mild bumping and scuffing to corners and extremities, strong, tight and handsome; internally clean and fresh, plain endpapers, laid in at the front is an Als from Ernest R. Gee, the pre-eminent sporting rare bookdealer of the mid-20th century describing the volume, its rarity, value, and points to the prospective owner, illustrated throughout. A very handsome and presentable copy of a book that can only be described, by ourselves and Mr. Gee, as "Excessively Rare." 10 entries of varying completeness in OCLC, and a ridiculously scant showing in trade unless you happened to be Ernest R. Gee. The brainchild of Cadwallader Colden, writer and sporting magazine entrepreneur, "The United States Sporting Magazine" was in fact his second attempt after the equally rare and equally doomed "New York Sporting Magazine." The NYSM ceased printing abruptly in December 1834; it was expensive and impractical, and a massive warehouse fire that destroyed all of the stock and a considerable amount of art and copy was the final straw. Colden was clearly not a man who was down for long, because by November 1835 he was beavering away on his new project: "In offering this work to the public, and more especially to the subscribers of the late New York Sporting magazine.we would remark that although somewhat varied in form and title, it is intended as a continuation of and substitute forthat periodical, which we think an eesential improvement in appearance and a great reduction in price, without materially decreasing the quatity of the matter." [VanWinkle 30] Although his skill in creating a varied and interesting sports journal was not in question, Colden fell frequent victim to his own high standards and anbition. The US Sporting magazine ran for only ten issues, with a 4pp. survey of events in Doncaster rounding out volume I, and the American and English Racing Calendars accompanying Vol II.
