ESTC T87493. At the end of the Introduction is the name in manuscript, N. Bailey, probably his signature to ensure copyright. On the verso of the titlepage the name of Gulielimus Embrey, with calendar dates on the inner front pastedown, pen-trials on the rear, together with Joseph Bonaparte, Jerome Bonaparte, Neopolia Bonaparte. Bailey, who died in 1742, was the most important predecessor of Samuel Johnson, with 30 editions of this dictionary up to 1802. His other major work, the expanded Dictionarium Britannicum, was published in 1730, and revised in 1736. Johnson made extensive use of this, and in return editions of Bailey published after his death borrowed from Johnson. Bailey was the first to include the Anglo-Saxon four-letter words C*** and F*** in a dictionary. Johnson has nothing on genitals, male or female, and although Ash (1775) also defined them in the 18th century, nobody else put the 'C' or 'F' words in general English dictionaries until 1965. In this copy a prudish early owner has inked out the two words. The definition of cricket is very basic, and as usual the game is the third definition of cricket after the insect and the stool. It is odd that cricket is defined as 'a sort of play with a ball' (no mention of a bat), whilst bat is defined as 'a club to strike the ball with, at the play called cricket'. Bailey is the only dictionary compiler to have Trull as 'to trundle'. Every other dictionary appears to have 'trull' as a whore or strumpet. Editions from 1755, after Bailey's death, remove the connection with trundle.
