Paperback. In the autumn of 1072, a Bulgarian aristocrat named Georgi Voyteh assembled a network of boyars and municipal magnates across the Vardar and South Morava basins and set in motion the most serious challenge to Byzantine authority in the Balkans in a generation. The Bulgarian empire had been gone for fifty years. Voyteh intended to bring it back. The Uprising of Georgi Voyteh (1072-1073) reconstructs the full story of the Bulgarian uprising of 1072 - from the careful conspiracy that organised it to the coronation at Prizren that proclaimed it, from the military campaigns that briefly made it real to the catastrophe at Taonios that ended it. It traces the compound Byzantine disasters that created the window of opportunity: the destruction of the imperial field army at Manzikert, the fall of Bari to the Normans, the Pecheneg raids on the Danube, and the fiscal predations of the minister Nikephoritzes, whose grain monopolies and mandatory cash taxation converted Bulgarian provincial resentment into organised rebellion. At the centre of the story stands Constantine Bodin, the Dukljan prince crowned as Peter III, Tsar of the Bulgarians, whose captivity and eventual escape illuminate the human cost of imperial politics. Around him stand the conspirators, the loyalists, the mercenaries, and the historians whose fragmentary testimony is all that survives of a moment when an empire thought extinct almost lived again. À propos de l’auteur
Gavan Doheny grew up between the Atlantic coast of Connacht and the medieval streetscapes of Galway city, and has spent much of his adult life pursuing the conviction that the history of the medieval world is best understood not as a sequence of dates and dynasties but as a human story of extraordinary complexity and enduring relevance. His particular passion is for the frontier zones of the medieval world - the borderlands where empires met local traditions, where administrative ambition encountered the durability of political memory, and where the grand claims of universal authority were tested against the specific stubbornness of the people those claims were supposed to encompass. He has written extensively on Byzantine and South Slavic history, on the dynamics of medieval state formation, and on the long arc of Balkan political development from the early medieval period through the Ottoman conquest. He lives in the west of Ireland.
