Urban Logistics: Management, Policy and Innovation in a Rapidly Changing Environment

Approximately 80 per cent of European and American citizens live in an urban environment. Due to their large populations and extensive commercial establishments, urban areas require large quantities of goods and services for commercial and domestic use. This results in increasing levels of demand for freight transport services. Freight transport in towns and cities is a major contributor to environmental impacts, particularly to local air pollution and noise. Urban Logistics addresses public policy makers, freight transport companies and receivers of supplies, providing them with the information and guidance to affect change in the logistics of the city.

Urban Logistics is written by an outstanding team of international editors combining their expertise and using their research from leading business schools in Sweden and the US. There are also valuable contributions from academics and industry experts from companies and universities from all over the world. The book includes clear examples of initiatives that work and business case developments, as well as toolkits for policymakers and managers who are devising new initiatives. There is an in-depth examination of different aspects of urban logistics, such as retail logistics for cities, urban food supply chains, services and the special logistics requirements involved, construction, waste management and e-commerce and home delivery. There is also a focus on networks and partnerships and an analysis of innovation as a new constant.

Michael Browne was appointed professor at the University of Gothenburg in 2015. His main research focus is on urban logistics and he provides academic leadership in the Urban Freight Platform, a University of Gothenburg and Chalmers initiative supported by the Volvo Research and Education Foundations (VREF). He is also a member of the VREF Center of Excellence for Sustainable Urban Freight Systems (CoE-SUFS) led by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is committed to engaging practitioners and policymakers with the research community on all aspects of logistics impacting on future urban goods transport. Before his appointment in Gothenburg he was at the University of Westminster in London for 25 years and he continues to chair the Central London Freight Quality Partnership. He is a visiting professor at the University Paris II (Panthe´on-Assas) and the University of Southampton.

Sönke Behrends is a senior researcher at IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, Gothenburg.

Johan Woxenius is professor of Maritime Transport Management and Logistics at University of Gothenburg since 2008. He received the degrees of M.Sc. (Industrial engineering), PhD and associate professor/docent at Chalmers University of Technology. His main research field is maritime and intermodal freight transport and the research covers sustainability, industrial organisation, production systems, traffic designs and information systems. He has also published articles on urban freight, joint transport of freight and passengers and more fundamental articles on transport detours and global production systems.

He leads University of Gothenburg's part of the maritime research and education programme Lighthouse (www.lighthouse.nu), the logistics research centre Northern LEAD (www.chalmers.se/tme/lead-en) and the Area of Advance Transport (www.chalmers.se/en/areas-of-advance/transport), all run together with Chalmers University of Technology.

Johan Woxenius is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, he is on the scientific advisory board of Volvo Research and Educational Foundations and a member of Schenker Sweden's Strategic Advisory Board. He is associate editor of Transport Reviews and serves in the editorial boards of some other. For the World Conference on Transport Research Society, he leads Topic Area B Freight and is also member of the Scientific Committee.

Genevieve Giulano conducts research on relationships between land use and transportation, transportation policy analysis, and information technology applications in transportation at the University of Southern California.

Dr. José Holguín-Veras, is the William H. Hart Professor and Director of the Volvo Research and Educational Foundations Center of Excellence for Sustainable Urban Freight Systems, and the Center for Infrastructure, Transportation, and the Environment at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is the recipient of the 2013 White House's Transportation Champion of Change Award, the 1996 Milton Pikarsky Memorial Award, and the 2001 National Science Foundation's CAREER Award. According to Google Scholar, he is one of the most widely published and cited freight researchers in the world. His research interests are in the areas of freight transportation modeling and economics, and humanitarian logistics. His research has led to major changes in transportation policy to improve urban freight systems. His work on humanitarian logistics has played an influential role in how best to respond to large disasters and catastrophic events. He is President of the Pan-American Society of Transportation Research. He is an Associate Editor of leading journals including Transportation Research Parts A and E, Journal of Operation Management, among others. He received his Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin in 1996; a M.Sc. from the Universidad Central de Venezuela in 1984; and a B.Sc. from the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo en 1982.
