Gallion and Simon Eisner's The Urban Pattern: City Planning and Design is a mid-century treatise on urbanism and civic development. First published in 1950 and issued here in its September 1958 fifth printing, the work delivers a critical survey of urban form across six structural sections, tracing civic evolution from ancient gridirons and medieval enclosures through industrialization, modern zoning ordinances, and post-war suburban expansion. The volume serves as a visual archive of twentieth-century planning history. The text integrates architectural illustrations throughout, including black-and-white aerial survey photographs by Fairchild Aerial Surveys, historical fortification diagrams, regional transit plans, and legislative zoning maps. Co-authored by Arthur B. Gallion, Dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Southern California, alongside municipal planning consultant Simon Eisner, the treatise addressed the socio-economic realities of mid-century urban growth. Gallion and Eisner united physical architectural design with municipal administration, housing policy, and democratic civic responsibility. The front pastedown bears an ownership signature and Syracuse University student address believed to be those of architect David Kahler, 1936 to 2026, inscribed during his fourth year at Syracuse University School of Architecture. Kahler later served as president of Kahler Slater and co-architect of the Milwaukee Art Museum's Quadracci Pavilion alongside Santiago Calatrava, making the volume a physical record of his formative architectural training.
