Présentation de l'éditeur: Few writers have taught us more about the ancient world than M. I finley. This provocative and wide-ranging collection of his essays contains illuminating discussions of some major issues: the nature of the Spartan state, the development of Greek law, mythological thinking in the Greek historians, utopian ideas old and new. Yet Finley's immense and detailed knowledge of ancient societies is matched by his equally challenging insights into far larger topics of historical technique (can archaeology and anthropology really teach us much about ancient history?), the dangers of easy generalizations (was there ever really a Greek nation?) and the ways in which we all use the past to deal with our present problems (why have political activists from Isocrates to Edmund Burke and F. D. Roosevelt all preached a return to some kind of 'ancestral constitution?) The final chapter considers the boldest question of all: what the classical tradition still has to offer and why it is still worth studying history and the ancient world.

Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good Minus. 1st Edition. First Edition ( 'Published in 1975 by The Viking Press). This book came from the collection of the renowned sociologist Daniel Bell. However, he did not write his name in the book and he did not make any markings. The book is in very nice condition. You can see the covers in the photos. They are quite clean. The silver lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The publisher's name is in green at the bottom of the spine, mixing it up I guess. The cloth at the top edge of the spine is slightly lower on one side so a bit of the normal threading behind it is visible. Kind of odd since there is no loss of cloth. At the bottom edge of the spine there's a slight bit of crinkling. The cover edges and corners are in excellent shape, no rubbing. The top page edge is a light green. It looks very good. The middle page edge is deckled or rough-cut. They did a very good job. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and end papers are also a light green. They are perfectly clean and free of wear. The interior of the book is in excellent shape. The pages are exceptionally clean. I'm not finding any soiling. There aren't any turned-down corners or placeholder creases. I saw one light crease just off the outer edge of one page, not reaching the print. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. The dust jacket is very clean. It does have a small tear off the front top edge just adjacent to the spine. There are also a couple of tiny nicks at the spine's top edge, and on the rear cover there is a tear and crease off the top edge (see third photo). The flaps are also quite clean. There is a small spot of crinkling at the front flap's top edge, also a very thin crease coming down from this edge. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. From the front flap: 'central theme: how do people think about their past, and what difference does it make to them? Professor Finley explores how the first historians-- Greeks, of course-- understood the past (was it myth? was it history?); How makers of laws used (and abused) the past to justify their present deeds; how each new generation reinterprets and re-creates the past anew; how modern historians apply their own preconceptions when they 'objectively' interpret the past. These virtuoso essays are bristling with provocative interpretations and important new knowledge, yet, as always, M. I. Finley wears his learning lightly and advances his notions with grace and conviction.' If you can't make out the blurb on the rear cover from The Times Literary Supplement, it reads 'There will be few readers, including other classical scholars, who will not be able to learn from him-- about our own as well as the ancient world-- and gain enormous pleasure in the process.'.
