Contemporary tree sheep, lettering piece and gilt fillets to boards, blind tooling to board edges. A few shallow scuffs to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, spine ends bumped, corners bumped and somewhat worn, hinges starting, later owner bookplate (Joseph A. Sadony) to front pastedown, early owner signature (W. Thorndike) to front endleaf, small embossed stamp (of Sadony) to title page. Light browning to interior, light foxing in places. An attractive copy. $100. * A fascinating "how-to" manual for the citizens of the young United States, providing the essential legal templates that governed daily life and commerce at the turn of the 19th century. It contains a comprehensive collection of forms-from deeds and wills to indentures and mortgages-all "Calculated for the Use of the Citizens of the United States" and made "Conformable to Law" following the Act of Congress. Freeman was clerk of courts, a register of probate and a probate judge in Massachusetts. Isaiah Thomas [1749-1831] was an important early Massachusetts printer, newspaper publisher and author. He was also the founder of the American Antiquarian Society. Includes a valuable three-page list of law books distributed by Thomas and Andrews at the time, providing a unique snapshot of the 1805 Am.
