A propos de cet article

The fifth, revised edition of Henry Fielding's celebrated Cervantine satire of 18th century English society, illustrated with twelve plates after James Hulett. In contemporary full calf bindings. The fifth edition, revised and corrected. ESTC No.: T89885. Illustrated with twelve engraved plates by James Hulett, with five plate to volume I, and seven plates to volume II. Collated, complete. First published in 1742, this work is one of Fielding's earliest and most important novels. Conceived partly in response to Samuel Richardson's enormously successful Pamela, it begins with the comic conceit that its hero, Joseph, is Pamela's virtuous brother, before developing into a much broader Cervantine satire of 18th century manners and society. The novel follows the good-natured Joseph Andrews and the memorably absent-minded clergyman Parson Abraham Adams through a succession of witty misadventures. Henry Fielding (1707-1754) was an English novelist, playwright and magistrate, and one of the most influential figures in the development of the English novel. Alongside the present work, he is best remembered for Tom Jones and Amelia. A desirable early illustrated edition of one of Fielding's major novels. In contemporary full calf bindings. Externally, worn. Rubbing and bumping to extremities, resulting in minor loss to calf. Rubbing to boards with the odd scratch and handling mark. Small chip to calf of front board to vol I, and rear board to vol II. Lacking spine label of vol I, label of vol II largely perished. Creasing and rubbing to spines with slight chipping to spine ends, more prominent to heads. Contemporary ink inscription to recto of first blank of vol I; light soiling to endpapers. Rear endpapers of vol I adhered together. Hinges slightly strained, but holding. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean if slightly age toned, with the odd light spot and handling mark. Light cockling to leaves. Good.…
