A propos de cet article

A first printing of the second, enlarged edition - published in 1974 - a small pamphlet, published as 'Guernsey Historical Monograph No. 3 (General Editor: J. Stevens Cox, F.S.A.) With three historical illustrations reproduced. ***Near fine in white illustrated glossy card covers, stapled at the spine. The covers are beautifully clean and unmarked - just very slightly rubbed at the edges. No creases or tears. No fading. Internally also near fine with no previous ownership inscriptions. Interior pages clean with no foxing. No creases or tears. Printed on nice quality paper. ***186mm x 115mm. 20 pages, including an extremely interesting detailed list of Witchcraft trials in Guernsey (1563-1634) at the back of the book. ***'Good and evil we know in the field of this world grow up together almost inseparably; and the knowledge of good is so involved and interwoven with the knowledge of evil, and in so many cunning resemblances hardly to be discern'd, that those confused seeds which were imposed on Psyche as an incessant labour to cull out, and sort asunder, were not more intermist. - Milton, "Areopagitica". --- And so when my friends in Guernsey asked me to write a short account of what I had seen, heard and read of witches and their ways, both ancient and modern during my stay in the Island, I wondered at first whether as Psyche must have done at times when confronted by her confused seeds, the labour might well defeat me. But I soon recalled that once certain definitions were made concerning witches, , and facts about covens and sabbats and devils made plain, the matter would probably fall into place. (Quote taken from the author's introduction) ***A very interesting pamphlet - surprisingly uncommon in any printing. A lovely copy of this fragile item. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only, and we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate (e.g. for paperbacks and pamphlets). For heavier books and sets, please contact us for postal rates before ordering, especially if purchasing from outside the UK.…
