"On the Camera Lucida, etc. Considerations sur la Camera lucida du Dr. Wollaston" being extracts from a letter from R.B. Bate to Nicholson (of Nicholson's Journal) pp 77-83 in: "Bibliotheque Britannique, ou Recuell extrait des Ouvrages Anglais periodiques et autres." volume 43. Geneva, Imp. De la Bibliotheque Britannique, 1810, in the Science et Arts series. 396pp. Paper-covered boards and spine. There is a little wear and rubbing to the boards, though overall the binding is quite nice. VERY GOOD. The text is very crisp and bright. VG copy overall, if not better. [++] The "Bibliotheque Britannique" provided translations of significant and important papers (mostly extracts, or reviews, though with some complete article translations) that were written primarily in English and then translated into French to reach a wider audience in Europe. Many of the leading lights were published here including Jenner, Davy, Thomson, Wollaston, Waterhouse, Gay-Lussac, Pictet, and many others. The journal was active 1796-1815 after which it changed direction somewhat and renamed "Bibliotheque Universelle".[++] "In 1806, Sir William Hyde Wollaston patented the Camera Lucida and brought life-drawing to a whole new level. Wollaston s device was simple: a prism on an adjustable stand. When an artist looks down through the prism, they see the world in front of them, plus their hand on the page, combined in perfect superimposition. .The Camera Lucida was the latest in a quest for automated drawing stretching back to the Renaissance. Almost immediately after the invention of linear perspective a set of graphic and mathematical rules for constructing realistic drawings artists proposed mechanized ways to draw from life.--NeoLucida, the Camera Lucida, a Brief History. [++] Also bound with much else including: [++] Ages Ibbetson, "on the Stem of Trees, etc. Sur a tige des arbres, et Recherches pour decouverte ;a cause du mouvement dans les plantes." pp 120-136, 215-225; translated from the English from Nicholson's Journal [++] J.G. This is one of his two papers on his extensive and easrly work on the voltaic pile and galvanism. [++] GAY-LUSSAC and Thenard, "Extrait d'un Memoire sur l'Analyse vegetale et minerale.(published 15 January 1810, pp 351-366. [++] Also a long three-part paper by PICTET on the barometer ("Surla mesure des hauteurs par le barometre". [++] And lastly, and certainly not least, an unexpected appearance by Thomas JEFFERSON: "Copie de la lettre de S.E. Le President Etats-Unis d'Amerique au Dr. Benjamin Waterhouse. (1 December 1808) on upland and mountain rice cultivation, pp 295-298. For a full explanation of Jefferson/rice see the Jefferson Encyclopedia online at the Monticello website.
