Item description from seller

Single sheet. Broadside. 14 x 11 inches on heavy stock board. In poor condition. Stained, chipped and worn with old clear tape on recto and verso. The bureau which began operation on July 6, 1917, was meant to protect immigrants from abuse and assist in their integration into American society. They soon realized that immigrants were being targeted and extorted with fake promises for draft exemptions. The Bureau published several warnings in various languages to inform immigrants concerning the draft laws during WWI. The Portuguese population in Massachusetts numbered around 40,000 at the time, one of the largest in the United States. Between 1890 and 1920, Massachusetts saw an enormous influx of Portuguese immigrants who arrived to find work in in textile mills in Fall River and New Bedford. However, the number of eligible draftees in that population was relatively small, hence the rare survival of this broadside. The Bureau was abolished on December 1, 1919, became the Division of Education of Aliens and by 1920 it was renamed the Division of Immigration and Americanization. OCLC finds no record of this broadside. AOS SOLDADOS E MARINHEIROS! CUIDADO COM OS INTRUJÕES!! Recuzem-se pagar pela Izenção. Não assinem accordos para pagarem por ela. NINGUEM PODE COMPRAR IZENÇÃO.
