Synopsis
Written in a style reminiscent of Ernest Hemingway’s famous short story, “The Big Two Hearted River” and Norman Maclean’s novella A River Runs Through It, the novel What Carries You follows the narrator Richard Wales, who describes himself as “a trial lawyer with a significant outdoor addiction,” through life. Written in the form of a personal memoir, the novel begins with an eight-year-old Wales, his strong willed and loving parents, and his life-long friend Mark. The chapters progress, interspersed with flashbacks, as we follow Wales through a slow maturity and a professional life that encompasses being a Western fly-fishing guide, a criminal prosecutor and, later, a judge. What carries Wales through life, however, is not his career but his passion for nature and fly fishing. Although the avid fly fisher will devour this novel, it is a book with considerably broader appeal as it touchingly explores a uniquely American life within the context of the baby boom generation. Written in a clear, often poignant and sometimes humorous style, the reader enjoyably follows Wales as he fly fishes through life’s peaks and valleys. But this is a sneaky novel. The reader gradually realizes that the author is exploring such themes as the search for happiness, race in America, understanding different cultures and lifestyles, confronting death, finding love, and the challenge of providing a childhood for Wales’ sons as equally charmed as his own. The novel’s themes don’t hit you over the head, but quietly envelop you while you enjoy Wales’ often star-crossed adventures. The final chapter finds an aging Wales, again with his friend Mark—and again outdoors—knowing that he will soon be “leaving this fine earth.” By the novel’s end, the character Richard Wales has become the reader’s interesting, opinionated, and valued companion. The reader is left with a tear and a smile and, like Wales, wanting more time together.
