This book begins with Strachey's statement of the therapeutic action of psychoanalysis representing the classical psychoanalytical technique that prevailed in the 1930s. Then Meissner takes up the shifts in thinking that have subsequently evolved. Today we hold a more relational concept of the therapeutic action based on a developmentally rooted, parent-child model. This places greater emphasis on the vicissitudes of relational involvements than on specific interpretive techniques. Emphasis is given to collaborative efforts between patient and analyist as central to the working of the analytic process. Factors such as empathy, interpretation and positive and negative transference to the therapeutic alliance are explored.

Etat : Gut. 2. Aufl. 217 Seiten Guter Zustand. - In this timely book, Dr. Meissner describes the changing pattems in analytic practicethe modifi-cations of psychoanalytic technique, which put greater emphasis on rational rather than on strictly interpretive aspects. The book begins with Stracheys Statement of the therapeutic action of psychoanalysis, representing the classical psychoanalytic technique that prevailed in the 1930s. Subsequent sections take up the shifts in thinking that have evolved in subsequent years, leading to significant modifications. In the final section Meissner focuses on the important developments in psychoanalytic practice that have evolved and prevailed in recent years. The classic Position was cast in terms of the structural theory, and it emphasized Interpretation as the major focus of psychoanalytic work. Stracheys argument centered on the role of mutative (transference) interpretations for the modification of psychic structure. In that context, analytic objectivity and therapeutic neutrality played a dominant role. The next step in the evolution of thinking about the analytic process came with Loewalds classic paper enunciating a more specifically relational concept of therapeutic action. This is based on a developmentally rooted, parent-child model that places a greater emphasis on the vicissitudes of relational involvements. In subsequent years. under the impetus of object-relational and self-psy-chological thinking, the debate has flourished over which aspects of the interpretive process and the relational involvement achieve effective therapeutic change. Meissner gives particular emphasis to mutual and collaborative efforts between patient and analyst as central to the working of the analytic process. He explores the relationship of empathy, Interpretation, and positive and negative transference to the therapeutic alliance. Dr. Meissner sees through the clouds of contro-versy to clarify and evaluate the changes that, like the shifting of plates in the earths crust, are slowly but immutably altering analytic therapy today.
