Extreme fasting promised clarity, control, and transformation. Instead, it pushed my mind to the breaking point and taught me the most profound lesson of my life: balance, compassion, and survival. When Hard Fasting Goes Too Far is a deeply personal memoir about chasing discipline to an extreme and paying the psychological price. While attempting a 96-hour weekly fasting routine, I experienced a severe mental health crisis that led to hospitalization and a long, humbling recovery. Already living with schizophrenia, I believed endurance would make me stronger. What I learned instead is that strength without care can quietly become self-destruction. During that time, reality fractured. I saw animated birds floating like scenes from a cartoon. I heard voices that felt intimate and convincing. I smelled roses and believed they were messages of love. None of it was real. Yet in the moment, it felt undeniable. Losing touch with reality forced me to confront how fragile the mind can be, and how urgently it deserves protection. Healing was slow, but it was possible. It took weeks for the psychosis to quiet, months for the hallucinations to fade, and patience to adjust to new medication and a new rhythm of life. Step by step, I rebuilt stability. I discovered that recovery is not dramatic. It is made of small, consistent acts of care. Two nourishing meals a day. Home-cooked food. Gentle movement. Rest. Repetition. Respect for my limits. Through that simplicity, my life opened again. I regained clarity. I sustainably lost weight. I returned to work. Most importantly, I rebuilt trust in my own body and mind. I stopped trying to conquer myself and started learning how to live with myself. This is not a diet manifesto or medical instruction. It is a story of resilience, vulnerability, and hope. It is for anyone navigating mental health challenges, anyone questioning extreme wellness culture, and anyone searching for a kinder way forward. It is a reminder that healing is not weakness. Choosing balance is not failure. Sometimes the bravest act is not pushing harder, but learning where to stop, and choosing to care for yourself anyway.
