A propos de cet article

8vo, pp. [8], 313, [3]; frontispiece portrait; original blue cloth stamped in gilt on upper cover and spine; text a touch toned, else a very good, sound copy. This copy with a nifty inscription: "Personal property of Bill [drawing of a trumpet with a g-clef and 3 musical notes designating '63'] y.o. Beamish / at present in ward S-4 39th Gen. Hospital." No doubt that Beamish served as a private in World War I as part of the 15th Reinforcements, Wellington Infantry Battalion, B Company, New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and that he and his family were Irish, but little seems to be known of him otherwise. Cornwall Hospital (a.k.a. the 39th United States General Hospital) was constructed in 1942 "in Cornwall Park, Auckland, New Zealand during World War II by the American Army . It accommodated casualties from the war in the Pacific. From 1945 it was leased by the Auckland Hospital Board to provide maternity and geriatric services and closed in 1975" (Wikipedia). Coincidentally, the book is dedicated to "the magnificent donor of Cornwall Park, Sir John Logan Campbell," a Scottish-born New Zealander who donated Cornwall Park to the people of New Zealand.…
