Six editions were published in 1722, all are rare, with only 11 copies recorded in total. 1st (Bodleian, Illinois), 2nd (Liverpool), 3rd (Glasgow, Oxford, Yale (Beinecke), 4th (Armagh, Folger, Huntington, 5th (Wellcome), 6th (BL). A second part was also issued this same year (BL), and a collection of the Works of the Author of Whipping-Tom was published in 1723. A satirical work lambasting women for their foibles, with a final piece in verse on Hyde Park prostitutes. The frontispiece depicts four ladies seated drinking tea, with a devil hovering above saying 'they are all my owne', and a smaller devil figure under the table looking up the skirt of one of the ladies. It takes its name from the 'Whipping-Tom' attacks, first recorded in central London in 1681. The attacker would approach unaccompanied women in alleys and courtyards and spank them on the buttocks, before fleeing. A second attacker also nicknamed 'Whipping Tom' was active in late 1712 in Hackney. This attacker would approach lone women in the countryside, and beat them on the buttocks with a birch rod. Around 70 attacks were carried out before a local man named Thomas Wallis was captured and confessed to the attacks. According to Wallis, he was 'resolved to be Revenged on all the women he could come at after that manner, for the sake of one Perjur'd Female, who had been Barbarously False to him'. He claimed his plan was to attack a hundred women before Christmas, cease the attacks during the Twelve Days of Christmas, then resume the attacks in the new year.
