A propos de cet article

16 pp. 8vo. An adaptation of Reasons for which the Service Booke, Urged upon Scotland Ought to bee Refused (1638), a work published in response to the controversial introduction of the Book of Common Prayer in Scotland. Charles I commissioned the Scotch version and made it mandatory in an attempt to standardize the patchwork Church of Scotland and bring it in line with the monarch-friendly Church of England - it was so poorly received that it led to riots, the emergence of the Scotch Covenanter movement, the Bishops' Wars, and ultimately Charles's own execution. This title appeared c.1714 and in 1726 alongside further controversies in the Church of Scotland over conformity and the use of the Book of Common Prayer. Its publication also coincides with the 1713 and 1723 London printings of A Letter to the People of Scotland in Order to Remove Their Prejudice to the Book of Common Prayer. William R. Whittingham (1805-1879) graduated the General Theological Seminary in 1825 and was named librarian of the newly founded school. He later accepted a position on the faculty in 1836. Whittingham was consecrated the fourth Bishop of Maryland in 1840 and served in that capacity until his death. Bishop Whittingham's important theological library became the core of the Maryland Diocese library, which was in turn transferred to the General Theological Seminary. Excepting this copy, OCLC locates 4 copies, 1 outside the United Kingdom (Morgan Library). ESTC N471916 Disbound, closely trimmed. Leaves separated and lightly edgeworn, some toning and light soiling, perforated stamps to first and final leaves. Housed in red cloth slipcase and wrapper. Provenance: William R. Whittingham (ink initials to head of first page); Maryland Diocesan Library; General Theological Seminary (bookplates and inkstamp to verso of first leaf).…
