A propos de cet article

An unusually intimate primary-source account of the British Royal Family during World War II. Alathea Fitzalan Howard (1923-2001), granddaughter of Viscount Fitzalan of Derwent, was sent at sixteen to live at Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park. There she became a close companion of Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, sharing skating outings, drawing and dancing lessons, films, parties, wartime pantomimes, and visits with King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. The significance of the diaries lies partly in their immediacy: these were private observations written by another teenage girl rather than recollections composed decades later. Publishers Weekly called the diaries a captivating behind-the-scenes view of the Royal Family, while contemporary reviews also recognized their value as social history of wartime Britain. Particularly remarkable is Alathea's August 1943 observation about Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip of Greece, several years before their 1947 marriage. The volume is handsomely produced in dark green boards with gilt spine lettering and decorative royal motifs, illustrated throughout with photographs and reproductions-including a 1940 thank-you letter from Princess Elizabeth and photographs of the wartime Royal Family. The illustrated Windsor endpapers are especially attractive, locating Cumberland Lodge, Royal Lodge, Frogmore Lake, the Long Walk, Windsor Castle, and other places repeatedly encountered in the diary. Condition: the book is Near Fine, square and clean, with a sound binding and clean pages; only slight evidence of handling is apparent. Dust jacket: Near Fine, complete and unclipped, with light surface rubbing/handling and modest edge/corner wear but no significant loss. The jacket was designed by Min Choi, with jacket photography credited to Lisa Sheridan / Stringer / Getty Images. First U.S. Edition, First Printing, confirmed by the complete number line 1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2. First published in Britain by Hodder & Stoughton in 2020; this Atria Books edition is the first American edition, issued in 2021.…
