Item description from seller

[xiii], 202 pages. Illustrations. Appendices. This is in very good condition with slight scuffing to the dust jacket. Winning! is a 1972 baseball strategy and philosophy book by legendary Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame manager of 17 years, Earl Weaver. It breaks down his relentless, numbers-driven approach to putting players in advantageous situations and prioritizing consistent execution over traditional baseball dogma. Before the mainstream "Moneyball" era, Weaver utilized meticulous scouting and stat-tracking to manage matchups. Earl Sidney Weaver (August 14, 1930 – January 19, 2013) was an American professional baseball manager, author, and television color commentator. Weaver played in minor league baseball as a second baseman from 1948 to 1960. In 1956, he began his managerial career, serving as a player–manager for five seasons before he stopped playing to concentrate on managing, without ever having played in Major League Baseball (MLB). He progressed through the minor league system before going on to become a manager in the Major Leagues with the Baltimore Orioles (1968–1982; 1985–86), winning a World Series championship in 1970. He was a three-time Manager of the Year. In 1996, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In eleven minor league seasons as a manager, he compiled a record of 884 wins and 760 defeats. During his time managing the Orioles from 1969 to 1982, he had a record of 1,306 wins to 885 losses; a .596 winning percentage. No team in Major League Baseball was within 70 wins of Weaver's total during that time. Derived from a Kirkus review: In his warm-up prologue the glib, colorful skipper of the Baltimore Orioles says he's going to talk about "revenge, pride, enthusiasm," and the only thing that really matters in professional baseball -- winning. It figures. Weaver's an authority on the subject, the Orioles having won the American league flag for the past three years. After recounting his lengthy career as a minor league manager, Weaver takes you into the Orioles' dugout and reveals how he makes out his lineup card with the aid of complicated player performance stat sheets, how he sets the pitching rotation, decides when to call for a bunt or hit and run, how the team works the pickoff play, etc. Grandstand managers will find it the greatest thing since the hot dog. And there's a fair share of scuttlebutt too: his thoughts on umpire Shag Crawford's calls during the 1969 World Series with the Mets; and the then recent Frank Robinson trade. Weaver might look and sometimes act like a comic, but as managers go he talks like an All-Star. This is for everyone who's tuning his vocal cords and dusting off the old mitt.
