Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. Margaret Avison's first book of poetry, awarded the 1960 Governor General's Award for poetry. Avison (1918-2007) is one of the most distinguished Canadian poets of the twentieth century, known for her dense, demanding spiritual and metaphysical work; she would go on to win the Governor General's Award a second time in 1990 and the Griffin Poetry Prize in 2003. [From front jacket flap] The title of this collection of poems comes from a walk in the wintry streets of Toronto. The earliest poem was written in 1937, although most of them date from 1956-59. The two themes that inspire these verses are weather and the attempt to find human terms with our social institutions. The author has arranged her poems for readers who like to skim through a book when they first take it up, since she herself approaches a new book of poetry in this way and would rather find her own groupings than have the poems already grouped for her.
